Reconstitution of the gut microbiome improves bone matrix strength after skeletal maturity

Our work highlights that the gut microbiome has the potential to improve and impair aspects of bone strength in skeletally mature mice. The aim of our study is to determine if a fecal microbiota transplant from an age- and sex-matched donor with an unaltered microbiome can restore bone tissue strength in mice that had their microbiome chronically altered. We found that reconstitution of the gut microbiota restored lost strength of bone matrix after skeletal maturity and that the gut microbiome has the possibility to be used as a therapeutic target to improve bone matrix in adults. Donor microbes in the fecal microbiota transplant successfully engrafted and stabilized in the recipient for two months, demonstrating the lasting effects of microbiome therapeutics on the health of distal tissues.
