NIBIB K99 Postdoctoral Fellow
Northwestern University
Evanston, Illinois, United States
Dr. Catherine Majors is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University in Professor Keith Tyo’s lab. Her research focuses on split enzyme engineering towards the goal of creating an ultrasensitive in vitro antigen detection assays. Dr. Majors has been awarded both a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F32) and a K99/R00 Transition to Independence Award from the NIBIB for her postdoctoral work. Dr. Majors competed her B.Eng in Biomedical Engineering in 2012 at Vanderbilt University with a minor in Medicine, Health, and Society and a Global Health Certificate. She received her PhD in Bioengineering from Rice University in 2019 while supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Rebecca Richards-Kortum, where her research focused on the development of optical and microfluidic methods to detect bacterial infections in neonatal and maternal populations. Starting in August 2024, Dr. Majors will be joining the faculty in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at Clemson University, where she plans to build a research program at the cross-section of her previous and current work: the engineering of novel biosensing pathways via protein engineering that can be implemented in vitro and the development and initial translation of these pathways into diagnostics for use at the point of care. When not working in the lab, Dr. Majors can be found running agility courses with her beagle Winston, racing in triathlons, knitting tiny sweaters for her niece and nephews, and sampling all the craft beer she can find.
