Photoacoustic Mapping of Cardiac Ablation at Three Myocardium Region

This study investigates the application of spectroscopic photoacoustic (sPA) imaging for the identification and quantification of ablated tissue in different heart regions, aiming to enhance the monitoring of radiofrequency (RF) ablation procedures used to treat heart arrhythmias. RF ablation involves using electric currents to isolate abnormal electrical signals, but its effectiveness is hindered by collateral tissue damage and inadequate visualization of treatment effects. In this study, three porcine heart regions were subjected to ablation, and sPA imaging was employed to distinguish ablated tissue from non-ablated tissue based on spectral variations. The study successfully identified and quantified ablated tissue regions, with accurate measurements of width and depth. The obtained results underscore the potential of sPA imaging as an intraoperative tool to monitor ablation-induced necrosis, improving the precision and outcomes of RF ablation procedures for conditions like atrial fibrillation.
