Hybrid 3D-Printed Conduits for Monitoring and Stimulation of Severe Peripheral Nerve Injuries

Over 20 million Americans currently suffer from peripheral nerve injury (PNI) resulting in $150 billion annually in health-care costs. PNI is often incapacitating – resulting in sensory and motor impairment, paralysis, and pain in the extremities. And the road to recovery rarely offers relief, as less than half of patients who undergo PN reconstruction surgery will achieve satisfactory functional recovery in their lifetime. Recent research has demonstrated that electrical stimulation applied to a regenerating nerve proximal to the site of injury increases its regenerative capability. However, stimulation provided without structural cues can lead to haphazard nerve growth that is no more likely to reach its target. This research presents a novel 3D-printed nerve guide conduit that can provide bulk stimulation of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) healing while also providing a generative environment of support.
