PhD Student
University of Washington
Seattle, Washington, United States
Susana Simmonds Bohorquez (she/her) is a PhD student in the Department of Bioengineering (BioE) at the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM) and the University of Washington (UW). She is co-advised by Dr. Jenny Robinson in the Tissue and Regenerative Engineering Lab and Dr. Ron Kwon in the Musculoskeletal Systems Biology Lab. Susana's scientific curiosity and love of creative problem solving led her to pursue academic research in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine after earning her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. She is currently seeking to combine the strengths of exploration-oriented genetics studies in zebrafish and translation-focused in vitro studies with patient tissues to answer questions related to meniscal tissue growth and regeneration in homeostasis and disease. While she loves to seek out answers to the always-increasing list of questions derived from her scientific work, Susana is most passionate about reimagining the scope, impact, and motivation of science and research as a whole. As a member of ISCRM UNITE's Executive Committee and UW BioE's Accreditation and Continuous Improvement Committee, she has sought to challenge and transform the norms for what it means to train to become an engineer, scientist, and researcher. She is most proud to be a mentor, in the research lab and in the UW community through AVELA, and an organizer, with UAW 4121, and she is thankful for the opportunity to learn and work among a community of brave and compassionate leaders at the UW and beyond.
