Simon Sanchez is a fourth-year PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Michigan State University. His research focuses on developing a biosensor for noninvasive and early endometriosis detection. To aid in the pursuit of this research, Simon was successful in receiving the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Beyond his research, Simon is a co-founder for a medical device start-up company, LaparAssist, and a consultant with miLEAD Consulting Group which enables him to gain practical experience in collaboration with the business community.
As a first-generation Mexican-American graduate student, Simon hopes to enhance the diversity of science by promoting the recruitment and retention of underrepresented trainees. Simon volunteers his time as a pen pal in the Letters to a Pre-Scientist program where he writes letters throughout the school year to middle/high school students to foster an enthusiasm for science. Simon also serves on the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Association, where he serves as a mentor to first-year graduate students. In his free time, Simon enjoys spending time with his dog, watching movies, and reading.
