Laura Paredes is an undergraduate biomedical engineering student from Colombia. She is currently a research intern at the University of Texas at San Antonio, working under the supervision of Dr. Maria Gonzales-Porras. Her research focuses on the role of adipose tissue in obesity and cancer and the development of new therapeutic strategies for these diseases. She is especially interested in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of adipose tissue and how they influence the development and progression of obesity-associated cancers, using a combination of in vitro and in vivo methods to study the interactions between adipose tissue and other organs. One of the main research goals is to design and test nanoparticles that can target and modulate adipose tissue functions. Her research interests also include tissue engineering and cellular mechanical and molecular properties. She is passionate about advancing research and education in biomedical engineering.
