Joseph Towles, PhD is an Associate Professor specializing in neuromuscular biomechanics and bioengineering education research at Swarthmore College. Towles's biomechanics research is focused on the discovery of general principles of neuromuscular mechanics and control of articulated systems as gleaned from studies of the hand primarily. Towles further aims to translate those principles into innovative surgical and rehabilitative strategies that restore function in persons with musculoskeletal or neurologic impairment. Towles's education research is focused on understanding how best to engage students around engineering concepts/experiences and how that understanding informs effective and inclusive teaching practices and learning activities in classroom and laboratory settings.
