Student
Stevens Institute of Technology
My name is Katie Monico. I am in my third year at Stevens Institute of Technology majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering while obtaining a minor in Biology. I am also interested in pursuing a Masters Degree in Engineering Management. I am eager to learn about the various engineering industries in medical devices and tissue engineering. As I go through my academic journey, I hope to connect with individuals in the field and develop my problem-solving skills.
This past year I was a part of the MINDS Scholars Program working with five other incredible students to create our project: Sensor Chip Programming for the Prevention of Wheelchair Pressure Ulcers. We created a device that acts as a standard wheelchair cushion attachment allowing for better blood flow for wheelchair users. We considered key design considerations of marketing, intellectual property, and regulatory strategy. This experience was one that allowed me to learn how to meet a biomedical need with a direct impact on individuals with disabilities and how to design medical technologies that have the potential for commercial success. I hope I continue to learn and grow as both a student and an individual.
