James Eichenbaum is pursuing his PhD in Biomedical Engineering under the direction of Megan McCain at the University of Southern California. He is building systems to better model nervous tissue and microfluidic devices to house cerebral organoids. James completed his Bachelors in Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. There, he learned the fundamentals of biomaterials and tissue engineering in Ali Khademhosseini's research group and applied his knowledge of microfluidics in Dino Di Carlo's research group. As a Capstone project, his team built a blood vessel-on-a-chip to study clotting effects of COVID-19. Now, he aims to create microphysiological systems better model nervous tissue, including neuromuscular junctions and the brain. He is particularly interested in the origins of neuropsychiatric disorders.
