(J-395) EndoSwipe: A Pull-Activated Endoscope Cleaning Device for Efficient Intraoperative Lens Maintenance

Introduction:: EndoSwipe is an innovative and efficient endoscope cleaning device specifically designed to ensure clear and unobstructed lens visibility during intraoperative procedures. The device is activated by a handheld syringe-like mechanism, which triggers a spring mechanism at the opposite end. This mechanism enables a 90-degree bend of the attached designed wiper in direct contact with the endoscope lens. The operating surgeon can twist the device from the outside and then the device will move within the body. The wiper swiftly and effectively removes debris and bodily fluids, guaranteeing optimal image quality throughout the procedure. The device is compatible with standard endoscopes used in hospitals, allowing hospitals a low-cost and low-effort solution to the time and money wasted during minimally invasive endoscopic surgeries. With future manufacturing, the hope is to make a disposable and sterile device that is single-use. With its user-friendly design and reliable cleaning action, EndoSwipe offers surgeons a convenient solution for maintaining peak endoscope performance, saving operating time, and improving patient safety.

Materials and Methods::

Materials:

1. 
   

   Handheld plastic pull-system: Its purpose is to be the actuator for device activation, a handheld device resembling a syringe, providing a comfortable grip and precise control for the user.

   
   


2. Stainless steel spring (1 mm diameter): Its purpose is to allow bending motion and wiper activation, generates controlled force, allowing the device to bend at a 90-degree angle and activate the attached wiper


3. Silicone composite wiper: Specially designed wiper with a surface area that matches the endoscope lens


4. Attachment using glue: Specially designed wiper with a surface area that matches the endoscope lens


5. 3D printed cap made from PLA: 3D printing technology utilized to create accurate and custom-designed parts

Methods:

1. 
   

   3D model cap design using Solidworks, and then 3D print

   
   


2. The spring mechanism was attached to the handheld syringe-like device using screws and nuts for secure integration. The wiper was carefully attached to the spring mechanism using adhesive glue, ensuring proper alignment and functionality.


3. The spring mechanism was attached to the inner wire for control from handheld device, and glued to adhere the bottom of the spring to the end of the channel device.


4. Plastic tubing attaches device to outside of endoscope.

Results, Conclusions, and Discussions:: Results: Preliminary testing of the EndoSwipe device demonstrates promising results for its cleaning efficiency and usability. Ongoing evaluations are being conducted to assess compatibility with different endoscope models and long-term durability. Feedback from medical professionals helps identify areas for improvement. It is important to note that before surgeons can use the device, it must undergo rigorous regulatory processes, including FDA approval, to ensure safety and efficacy. Continued testing, refinement, and compliance with regulatory requirements are vital for the device's successful integration into surgical practice.

Discussion: The EndoSwipe device holds significant potential for enhancing endoscope maintenance during intraoperative procedures. The combination of materials, including the handheld syringe-like device, stainless steel springs, adhesive glue, and 3D-printed components, contributed to the device's durability and functionality. The ongoing testing and improvement phase aims to further refine the device's design, optimize its performance, and address any potential limitations or challenges encountered during testing. FDA approval for the EndoSwipe would consist of a 510k referencing the predicate device, Apollo Overstitch™.


While the initial results are encouraging, further evaluation and refinement are necessary. Ongoing testing will assess the device's compatibility with a wider range of endoscope models and evaluate its long-term durability in clinical settings. Testing would first have to happen outside the body, then once FDA approval (Class II device) is achieved, the device can then be used in surgery.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the EndoSwipe device represents a promising solution for maintaining clear and unobstructed lens visibility during intraoperative procedures. The device's design, utilizing a handheld syringe-like device, spring mechanism, and specially designed wiper, enables efficient and user-friendly cleaning of endoscope lenses.
