(K-405) Exploring the Effect of Study Conditions on the Muse Device for Applications in a Surf Therapy Project

Within the scientific community, electroencephalography (EEG) is a common form of measuring brain activity for numerous conditions including chronic pelvic pain, depression and sleep apnea. When in the laboratory, EEG is often measured using electrodes either aligned on a cap or individually placed on participants' heads. Yet in the last few years, as research studies have begun to expand beyond labs, unconventional technologies for measuring brain activity have arisen, in particular the InteraXon Muse 2 headband. The purpose of this project is to investigate the different factors that may arise from using the Muse 2 to record EEG from patients outside of the laboratory and at the beach. First, we explored the possible effects that recording with wet electrodes versus dry electrodes may have on the relative power across multiple bands of activity. Secondly, we explored the possible effects that activities such as surfing may have on a patient's peak alpha frequency (PAF). The effects found may inform and guide procedures in future research studies.
